Kyler Murray to Patriots? Bill Belichick would have to make blockbuster trade – Patriots Wire

Kyler Murray is committed to pursuing the NFL, which means he thinks there are a handful of NFL teams that are committed to him.

Are the New England Patriots one of those teams?

It’s possible. The Patriots were interested in quarterback Baker Mayfield last season, and had a one-on-one interview with the quarterback in the days before the draft, according to ESPN. Mayfield and Murray were both productive under coach Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. If the Patriots were interested in Mayfield, an undersized quarterback and a product of the spread system, they might have interest in Murray, another undersized quarterback from the same system.

The question is whether the Patriots can get into range of drafting Murray, who is beginning to gain steam as a top 10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Some draft experts anticipate Murray falling to New England at No. 32 overall, where the Patriots have their first-round pick. The reality is that after the NFL combine, where Murray is sure to shine in workouts and interviews, the diminutive quarterback will shoot up draft boards and into the top 10 picks.

It’s what happens to talented quarterbacks like Murray every year — it’s what happened to Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield last season. Even if they’re mercurial, one teams falls in love.

If Murray does slip to New England at 32, picking him would be a no-brainer. He would be a compelling project for McDaniels and company. And Murray could be the quarterback to bridge the gap between Bill Belichick (and Tom Brady) as they transition to the era of McDaniels and Murray.

The question of drafting Murray becomes more befuddling if he doesn’t fall to the Patriots late in the first round. If they like him, can they really convince themselves to give up a haul of first-round and second-round picks to get into a place where they can select him? They’d be doing so in a closing window of Brady’s career. If he makes it to 45 years old, like he has promised, they have three more seasons remaining. A haul to get Murray would inhibit Brady and Belichick from racking up more Super Bowl wins in their final years.

With Murray’s talent, a deal could be tempting. But his height, which could be 5-foot-9, might end up presenting too much risk for New England to mortgage young talent for the next few years to prepare for the time after Brady.
