Miami apparently not ready to trade Tyler Herro after all – Vaught’s Views

After days of rumors that the Miami Heat might be ready to include first-round draft pick Tyler Herro in trade package for All-Star Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma Thunder, it now looks like that may not happen.

Herro, the 13th overall pick in the draft, agreed to contract terms with Miami Wednesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Herro averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game for UK to earn SEC Newcomer of the Year honors while shooting 46 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range. It doesn’t hurt that he also set the UK single season free throw record by hitting 93.5 percent.

Miami Heat president Pat Riley, a former UK All-American, liked the way Herro shot the basketball. However, he’s been even better than Riley might have thought. In five NBA Summer League Games, Herro has been sensational. He’s averaging 20.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.6 steals and 29.3 minutes per game.

He’s made 32 of 82 shots from the field and 24 of 25 free throws, a 96 percent mark.

Basically, Herro has been so good that NBA insiders were reporting Wednesday that Miami now does not want to include Herro in a trade, which seems to make sense because the team has to wait now to trade him since he signed the contract — something it didn’t have to do if he had not signed.

Those same insiders also note that Miami seems intent on keeping another UK player, Bam Adebayo, rather than including him in any trade.
