Free Press sports writers and columnists predict the outcome of Saturday’s annual rivalry game between Michigan and Michigan State (noon, Fox) at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor:

Orion Sang

Something weird could happen (as it often does in this rivalry), but U-M is the more talented team and is playing at home. The Spartans, meanwhile, have been depleted by injuries, haven’t won since September and have struggled mightily on offense. I doubt it will get ugly, but the Wolverines will probably have a comfortable lead for much of the game. Pick: U-M 31, MSU 17

Even in the hardest of times, the Spartans have been competitive under MSU coach Mark Dantonio against the Wolverines. His four losses have come by four, two, nine and 14 points. This will play out much like last year’s loss, with MSU keeping things close for much of the first three quarters thanks to its defense. But Shea Patterson and his receivers prove to be too much for a struggling MSU secondary. Pick: U-M 21, MSU 13

The Wolverines are the superior team on paper and will be the same on the field. Don Brown’s defense restrains an overmatched Michigan State offense and Michigan’s running backs help the Wolverines cobble together enough successful drives to give the maize and blue a second consecutive win over the Spartans for the first time since the Lloyd Carr era. Pick: U-M 24, MSU 10

Jim Harbaugh hired a new offensive coordinator during the offseason; Mark Dantonio did not. And this game will be a drastic reminder of how Harbaugh adjusted, and Dantonio was stubborn and simply moved his friends into new spots. The Spartans don’t have the scheme, the mojo, or enough healthy players to compete with the Wolverines. Pick: U-M 35, MSU 14

Shawn Windsor

The Spartans finally showed they could score. That was against Illinois. The Wolverines aren’t the Illini, and would love to add more misery to MSU’s four-game spiral. U-M is too good defensively while MSU isn’t what we thought it was defensively. Pick: U-M 31, MSU 13
