At first glance, Monday’s preseason AP Top 25 rankings looked how you’d expect with the recognizable juggernauts at the top and a few potential national title darkhorses rounding out the rest of the Top 10.
But rankings don’t always come as they appear. With voters, if there’s enough wild ballots to skew the results, some teams become more inflated than others, thus generating a false sense of preseason worth.
Most of us agree power rankings shouldn’t surface until we’ve seen a few games with opportunities to properly grade all three sides of the ball and player talent. But polls are fun, they generate buzz and for coaches, ample bulletin board postings.
Winners of 15 consecutive games and two of the last three national titles, Clemson earned the top spot in Monday’s release, followed by Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State to round out the Top 5. Other perceived contenders high in the rankings include LSU, Michigan, Florida, Notre Dame and Texas.
Being ranked inside the preseason AP Top 25 Poll doesn’t guarantee success, but it is a good indicator on which teams are already household names and will be under the spotlight over the next few months of fall.
