Danny Lee has fallen out of contention at the PGA Championship.

Kiwi golfer Danny Lee has capitulated in the second round of the US PGA Championship with his back-up driver.

The 28-year-old New Zealander, who was outright second following the opening round at Bethpage Black in New York on Friday (NZ time), has dropped 10 shots from his second round on Friday (Saturday NZT).

Lee’s second round of four-over 74, has dropped him back from six-under to four-over to sit in a nine-way tie for 10th.

Lee, who had an early tee off time, noticed a rattle in his driver when warming up.

“Pretty brutal. 6:45, starting at No. 10, with a 20-minute drive to that tee…I just could not get up early enough,” Lee told Golf.com.

“Maybe I should have opened up a tent right next to the putting green and started from there.”

Lee had a replacement driver but did not have time to hit with it before his round because the driving range was so far away from the 10th tee.

“We finished the warmup, then we put a replacement in, got in the shuttle and went to the 10th tee,” Lee’s caddie Jason Hamilton told Golf.com.

Lee began with a nightmare 41 on the back nine before improving dramatically with a 33 on the front nine.

A pair of bogeys on the par four 11th and 12th was compounded with two consecutive double bogeys on the par 15th and 16th.

Once on the front nine, Lee picked up three birdies in four holes through one to four.

But two more bogeys at the par-four sixth and seventh set him back further.

Lee did manage to close out his round with a birdie on the par three eighth – that was almost a hole in one – and the eighth par of his round on his final hole to finish at four-over through two rounds.

He was headed straight for the driving range.

“I’m going to hit some balls and figure out my go-to shots out there with the driver, I think. If I can hit a little bit more fairways, I think that’s going to be my key,” Lee told Golf.com.

Just one day earlier, Lee was celebrating his new-found driving power that had enabled him to compete with the big guns at a Major for the first time.

Overnight leader Brooks Koepka has picked up five further shots to hold the outright lead at 12-under.

After beginning the day at -7, Koepka shot a 65 to lead by seven shots over Jordan Spieth, Australian Adam Scott and another US golfer Luke List who are in a three-way tie for second at -5.

Lee’s fellow Kiwi Ryan Fox shot a second round 70 but was set to miss the cut following a shocker in the opening round with an eight-over 78.

He finished in a tie for 117th.

Tiger Woods shot a three over 73 in his second round and was also set to miss the cut.
