Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe revealed the club would continue to pay the salaries of all of its staff in full regardless of if football is played or not.

The club is riding a wave of optimism this week after it was announced head coach Pitso Mosimane had extended his contract with the Brazilians by two years.

And Motsepe kept the good news rolling with his commitment to pay salaries no matter what happened with the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

“We will continue to pay salaries whether there is football or no football. We will continue to pay everybody who works for us their salaries as if there was no coronavirus – it’s an obligation we have for them‚” said Motsepe.

The Motsepe Foundation has been at the forefront of support in South Africa during the Covid-19 enforced lockdown after it, along with its associated companies, pledged to contribute R1-billion to the coronavirus Solidarity Fund.

While most professional football clubs are looking to cut costs due to the lack of income caused by the break in sport action during the lockdown, staff at Sundowns will be breathing a collective sigh of relief.

At Cape Town City, for example, they are trying their best to maintain salary levels of staff but chairman John Comitis revealed a 20% pay cut would be necessary unless the Premiership season resumed sometime soon.

“We all have to act responsibly to try and get everybody to be able to at least put food on the table. We’ve undertaken to pay full salaries with a clear understanding that if there’s no football return [in May] there have to be some drastic changes‚” Comitis told TimesLive.
