Born on August 2, 1924, in New York, Baldwin was a writer, playwright, and civil rights activist, whose work on the subject of race made him one of the most important figures in 20th century American literature. He was one of the first Black writers to include queer themes in his work, most notably Giovanni’s Room, in 1956, which attracted many critics.Â
