A new scheme to give thousands of restaurants, cafés, and pubs a boost following the coronavirus lockdown comes into force today, offering members of the public 50% off meals out throughout August. The state-subsidized Eat Out to Help Out scheme will give diners half-price meals from Monday, up to the value of £10 per person at more than 72,000 venues.

The discount applies to eat-in food and drink but does not apply to alcohol. The scheme was first unveiled by chancellor Rishi Sunak on July 9, alongside a six month VAT cut on days out, staycations, and takeaways. It came after government figures showed 80% of hospitality firms stopped trading in April, with 1.4million workers furloughed.

MEAL DEAL Eat Out to Help Out launches postcode checker to find restaurants offering the meal deal in Derby. The new scheme sees diners get 50 percent off meals and non-alcoholic drinks, up to £10 ahead, in restaurants, cafes, and pubs throughout August.

To find places near you offering the discount, simply enter your postcode and the webpage will bring up nearby businesses. As of July 26, more than 53,000 places had signed up to Eat Out to Help Out. Big-name brands that have already said they'll be offering the discount include Wetherspoon, Nando's, and Costa. When The Sun used the online checker today using one London postcode, we found more than 100 restaurants, cafes and pubs were taking part in the local area.

For example, you can get a quarter of Peri-Peri chicken from Nando's for £1.85 in August after the South African chicken chain decided to pass on its VAT cut to customers.

Many venues which have reopened since 4 July have also been forced to operate at a lower capacity to comply with social distancing rules. Major chains including Pizza Express, Wagamama, Wetherspoons, Costa Coffee, McDonald's, and Nando's are on the scheme. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: "Our 'eat out to help out' scheme's number one aim is to help protect the jobs of 1.8 million chefs, waiters, and restaurateurs by boosting demand and getting customers through the door. "The industry is a vital ingredient to our economy and it's been hit hard by a coronavirus, so enjoy summer safely by showing your favorite places your support - we'll pay half."

No vouchers are required to use the offer, with the participating establishment deducting 50% from the bill and charging the discount to the Treasury. There is no minimum spend and you can use the discount as often as you like on eligible days. However, it does not apply to takeaways. Officials said there had been more than 3.3 million hits on the "eat out to help out" restaurant finder website since it started up last week.
