NEW YORK — Everything went well, considering the otherwise awful news.
Doctors told Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar that he has a tear in his right shoulder labrum that might need season-ending surgery.
But on Tuesday, Andujar said they told him some good things, too.
“It’s tough, but at the same time, I’m optimistic because my shoulder is strong,” Andujar said via the team’s Spanish translator Marlon Abreu at Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees were set to play the Tigers.
“When they did physical tests on my shoulder, combined with the physical results, my strength is there. So the probability of me working through this and getting back is there.
“It’s a matter of following up with the trainers and the plan that we have on the table and go one day at a time and see where we are in a couple weeks.”

New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird took some grounders at the hot corner Tuesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees plan to let Andujar rehabilitate for about two weeks. Then they’ll reassess and decide if he needs surgery.
Boone has called the tear “small.”
Andujar suffered the injury diving back to third base in Sunday’s loss to the Orioles. He didn’t play Monday, with D..J. LeMahieu taking over at the position. Andujar said he didn’t realize how bad the injury was and that it hurt a bit more Monday and felt a bit better Tuesday.
Andujar, the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year runner-up, said he’s staying positive.
“You’ve got to take it one day at a time,” he said. “The plan right now is to do physical therapy the next couple of days and we’ll see where w’ere going to be after that. The thing is, I feel good. I feel better. And throughout the whole thing, we want to have a positive mind. That’s very important.”
