Mahrez’s Man City stint

Manchester City acquired the services of Riyad Mahrez in the summer of 2018.

The Citizens are understood to have paid in the region of £60m for the Algerian international.

Mahrez had, of course, previously shone in the Premier League with Leicester City with the winger an instrumental figure in the Foxes’ title-winning campaign.

However, despite joining Man City, the side with by far and away the best attack in the English top-flight at the time, Mahrez had a rather average debut season at the Etihad.

In 27 league outings last term, Mahrez would net seven and assist four, which is by no means a terrible record, but the City faithful may have been expecting slightly more from their £60m signing.

Mahrez on Liverpool interest

But whilst Man City as a squad have declined somewhat this season, Mahrez’s form has picked up.

In total, the 29-year-old has bagged seven goals and provided 10 assists in 23 league ties.

Yet, whilst Mahrez looks to have found his feet in Manchester this season, the former Leicester man, apparently, came very close to joining one of City’s close rivals.

Speaking in an interview with beIN Sports on Instagram Live recently, Mahrez claimed that before he joined the Sky Blues, there was interest from Liverpool.

However, Mahrez went on to state that as soon as Jurgen Klopp’s side signed Mohamed Salah, that interest was finished:

“Before signing for Manchester City, there was interest from Liverpool in me, but as soon as they took Mohamed Salah, it was finished. As quoted by Goal.

And given how outstanding Salah has been since returning to England, Liverpool fans will probably be glad they landed the Egyptian over Mahrez.
