The Cure played The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction last night in Brooklyn. ⠀ The current line-up shared the stage for the acceptance with past members, Lol Tolhurst, Michael Dempsey, Pearl Thompson, Boris Williams and Perry Bamonte. ‘Shake Dog Shake’ was played in tribute to Andy Anderson. ⠀ ⠀ Talking on the new album, Robert said, ⠀ ‘”If I’m optimistic it will be finished before the start of this summer,” he said. “It will get mixed through the summer and get ready to be released towards the end of the year.” He also claimed said he’s “sure” the Cure will play North America “before the end of the year.”⠀ ⠀ Smith was then asked how it feels to be inducted into the Rock Hall. After saying “it’s been a really good experience,” he shared some ambivalence about the experience.⠀ ⠀ The other half of my head is like, “I’m not quite sure about the whole thing.” Because it’s a cultural thing. I just don’t know. I think it’s like the piece that they showed that’s taking really old interviews, it made me think about what I was saying—that I never wanted us to be part of what’s going on. So it’s funny, I was asked on the red carpet tonight, was I “super excited,” and it’s funny because I feel like we’ve been subsumed into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so there’s a part of me that’s like “nah, come on, if you were 15 you’d think ‘fuck this.’”⠀ ⠀ Smith then came back around to offer some words of appreciation for the Rock Hall:⠀ ⠀ But at the same time, there are people in it who are my heroes, so, you know, I’m not gonna… I think it’s great. You know, there are so many people that’ve done this, that I admire so hugely, that have inspired me so much, that it would be really, really wrong of me to be anything other than delighted to be part of it. How’s that? I’m going to run for office!”⠀ Pitchfork ⠀ ⠀ Photos by Sipa and Nicholas Hunt⠀ ⠀ Setlist:⠀ Shake Dog Shake⠀ A Forest⠀ Lovesong⠀ Just Like Heaven⠀ Boys Don’t Cry ⠀ #thecure #robertsmith #simongallup #andyanderson #porlthompson #pearlthompson @lol.tolhurst #michaeldempsey #boriswilliams #jasoncooper #reevesgabrels #rogerodonnell #rockhall2019 #goth #newwave #postpunk #80s #darkwave #instamusic #instagoth #alternative

The Cure are currently working on a new album and right after they played the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Friday night, Rolling Stone spoke to Robert Smith after their induction performance about it:
Because it’s the anniversary of Disintegration, I was thinking about how we did that, and how we turned that into something and what my mindset was. A key part of it was everyone being away from home, being away from everything they loved and being in one place at the same time. So for the first time in 20 years, we went into a studio — we actually went into the studio where they did “Bohemian Rhapsody,” funnily enough. It’s a great studio in the middle of nowhere. We just played music for three weeks. And it’s great. I know everyone says that. But it really is fucking great.
It’s so dark. It’s incredibly intense. And I’ve waited 10 years to do something that means something. It’s going to work really well. I’m not sure how much of it we’ll play this summer at festivals. It’s not really festival music. The songs are like 10 minutes, 12 minutes long. We recorded 19 songs. So I have no idea what to do now. The others are saying, “Triple album!” I’m saying, no let’s not. I’ll pick six or maybe eight songs and do like a single album. But I think it will delight our hardcore fans. And probably really, really infuriate everyone else. At my age, I’m still doom and gloom.
Smith says to expect the album this fall. As he said, it’s the 30th anniversary of their landmark album Disintegration and The Cure have already announced anniversary shows in Australia. Smith told Rolling Stone it is “inevitable” that they’ll bring Disintegration to North America as well, probably closer to Christmas. “We’re holding home theaters in New York and Los Angeles,” Smith said. “But I kind of feel like we should do it in a bigger venue. I’d like to a big show with it, really. It’s a bigger album. I think when we did the first three albums we did three nights at the Beacon in New York. It was much more punky. We were trying to recreate that vibe. But I think Disintegration is just big. So we need to do somewhere that’s just big.” Stay tuned.
Before the Barclays event, Robert Smith did a red carpet interview that was charmingly, hilariously awkward. When the very gregarious interviewer asks Smith “Are you as excited about tonight’s ceremony as me,” he replies “by the sound of it, no.” They talk about the new album and the Disintegration tour as well and you can watch that below.
